Scholastic Bowl
Join the SJS Scholastic Bowl Team!
Scholastic Bowl is a competitive activity sanctioned by the IESA and organized according to their by-laws. Matches pit teams from area schools against each other to earn points by answering questions from a variety of academic and general knowledge areas. Team members have fun utilizing knowledge and strategy to outwit their opponents as they represent our school. They wear team shirts to school on the days of meets. Sometimes they are dismissed early from school in order to set up or travel to meets. Best of all, they get to interact with their own teammates from other schools in an enjoyable and challenging setting.
Any student in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade can be on the Scholastic Bowl Team. For the first two weeks, we offer a trial period. Students may attend practices to see how much fun Scholastic Bowl is. If a student does join the team, we ask that they honor their commitment and finish out the season. Participants must pay the mandatory $40.00 activity fee.
Practices will be held on Thursdays from 4:30-6:00 in the 8th grade classroom. Team members must participate in at least one of these practices each week unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Competitions are set up with various teams from other schools. In 2023, competitions were held both home and away at 4:30 pm. We usually have 6-10 meets, and team members are expected to attend them all. Parents are responsible for arranging the transportation of their own child. Competitions will begin in early February and continue through April. The team will compete in the regional tournament. If we win there, we will advance to the sectional tournament. Winners of the sectional tournaments advance to the State Tournament in May.
If you would like to sign up, please contact the school office for a permission form. If you any questions, please contact the coach, Mr. Chris Larkner.
